Starters included Sea
Scallops Pondicherry, tender Rubiyan Jhinga, Chandi Murgh Kebab
served with silver leaf and Square Samosa with rustic flaky pastry
and accompanied by a tamarind chutney. The chosen wine to accompany
these was a pleasant but unchallenging 2003 Chateau de Roques
Bordeaux.
As if these were not
tasty enough we were then presented with Chef Mody’s special
creation ‘Tandoori Seared Foie Gras’, a first in Britain, so we were
told. The taste Balance was maintained with medjool dates and fresh
tamarind chutney and round off with a floral honey naan. To complete
the taste sensation we were offred a 2002 Rancho Zabaco Heritage
Vines Zinfandel, another first for the UK.

The main course
were equally exciting with perfect Paturi Macchi Chandernagore
sea bass wrapped in banana leaves; tender Narangi Badak with
kumquat orange and ginger chutney; melt in the mouth Barra Lamb
Chop; and a favourite Syrian Christaindish from Kerala, Irachi
Olathiu. The chosen wine was a palatable 1999 Mrelot form Chile.
Finally came a buttery Quail Biryani served in and earthenware
pot, accompanied by a 2000 Frei Ranch Vineyard Zinfandel from
E&J Gallo. This is a wine with attitude and possibly too much
for the biryani but, when tasted alongside the duck and beef
stir fry, proved to be a revelation, almost acting as a chilli
taste enhancer.
The meal rounded
off with L’Assietter du Chef accompanied by a golden 2003
Goldackerl Beerenauslese. This will be a festival not to be
missed so book your place. Husband and Mehernosh Mody have this
sophisticated restaurant operating to perfection and yet the
atmosphere is still relaxed and the staff yes there’s only one
old-fashioned, cosy word for it nice. |
